no news is good news, or so i'm told

This morning, I woke up to the annoyance that is EZ (that should be pronounced E-Zed rock, since you are in Canada, eh) Rock morning news. Apparently, some suicide (or "homicide", if you are a FOX news regular) bomber killed 106 and injured hundreds more in Baghdad. Now, this militant (or "terrorist" if you're a Global news regular) and his deed probably wouldn't have happened, or even been reported if someone wasn't occupying that country, creating the need for someone to be there to report it.
An English teacher once told me that the reason so many of us are depressed nowadays is because of the news. Watching the news shortens your lifespan. So, what's the big problem?
Well, let us begin with what the top stories always are: someone got killed, someone got mugged, someone got robbed, someone got hit by a car/truck/bus/train, or some pill you were taking for your depression due to watching the news is bad for you. How can you not get depressed after going through that?
We cut off the digital cable last month. It was far too depressing to watch news from the United States. Everything is bad for you. Even breathing. You've got the Fox and MSNBC people telling you that Democrats are bad for you. You've got the BBC telling you that dressing up in an inappropriate costume when you're royalty is bad for you. You'll have Al Jazeera telling you that America is bad for you soon.
But even with basic cable, there's too much news on. We have Global, CTV, CBC, CBC Newsworld, CBC Newsworld in French, CTV NewsNet, CH News, Cogeco North Bay News, ABC News, CBS News, NBC News. And then there's MuchNewsWeekly, those call in shows on TV Ontario and PBS. What's left after all that news?
YTV, the Political channels, the French channels, the Woman's Network, and the Christian Channel.
Think about this...in places in the world where televisions and radios and the internet are not readily available, how many people are extremely depressed? How many of them are on some antidepressant? How many of them are worried about something that is happening in a country on the other side of the world that they've never been to or possibly even heard of? I'm guessing none.
Maybe I should keep the news off for a while. Maybe I won't get depressed.

Good news, at least to me... This blog has been added to the Matthew Good blog list. Very cool.
