"In devestation there is opportunity..."

I watched The Corporation - Planet Inc. on TVOntario last night. I was quite impressed.

It was amazing to see how much profit there is in tragedy. One man provided two examples of this.

The first was the 1992 Gulf War, where the price of oil jumped from around $13.00 a barrel to over $40.00 a barrel. Today, with the second war in the Gulf, a barrel of oil is (as of two hours ago) just over $50.00 a barrel. And according to the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, by 2010 a barrel of oil should be around $100.00. That's only five years away. Of course, those who have money invested in oil will be happy to see the price increase. If you had money invested in something that will double in value in five years, wouldn't you be happy?

It's the people filling their vehicles who won't be.

The second was the 2001 terror attacks in New York and Washington. From the moment the planes hit, many brokers were seeing their clients get very rich. Why? Because the price of gold doubled on September 11th.

I wonder how many of them donated their newfound riches to help those affected...

I also found out that I'm perfectly happy and safe drinking Canadian milk. No BGH there.

And that Fox News changes stories to suit corporations and governments. But we all knew that, didn't we?

As well, every cell, every organism, is being patented by corporations. And the Fraser Institute thinks everything on this planet should belong to someone. The air, the water...everything.

After that, I watched The Hour. There was mention of the Fraser Institute, that same right wing group that makes suggestions to business and government. They had their two newest members, Preston Manning (former leader of the Reform Party) and Mike Harris (former Progressive Conservative leader in Ontario) telling the government to dump public health care in favour of privatized health care. Now let's see...government ends public health care, people have to pay to get medical treatment, and those who can't afford it won't get it. But it will mean lower taxes, right?

Not necessarily...if the government is taking in so much money in taxes, chances are they're not going to just hand it back to Canadians. Taxes won't be lowered, and you'll still be paying through the nose for health care. Governments will always find a way to keep your money in their pockets.

I'd rather pay the high taxes and know that if something happens, I can go to a doctor without fear of the bill. And I wouldn't trust the word of either Manning or Harris. Manning has always seemed to follow American examples when running for office. And Harris...he closed hospitals in Ontario and sent nurses packing to the United States. He also told everyone that Ontario was doing well financially. When his party was defeated (he ran off and left someone else to lose), we got the shock of a massive debt. Which we're now paying for. With service charges for health care and higher hydro bills.

I remember when the Goods and Services Tax was introduced. We were told that on some products, the price would decrease. On some products, there wouldn't be any GST. The government was saying that if you bought a major appliance, for example, there wouldn't be any GST at all.

I know people who buy a book a week. There's GST on that.
There's GST on some of my groceries.
There's GST on our phone, internet, and gas bills.
Those are things we purchase all the time. That GST adds up.

When you buy a fridge or a stove, it lasts 10 years. That GST on the other things is every day.

They will keep your money in their pockets. Trust me on this.
