my man Furious Styles....

There's a move here in the province of Ontario to make beer and wine available in corner stores. Well, there's the government for you. What is popular isn't always what is right. And this is a popular idea, but it's definitely not the right idea.

I have seen teenagers, and even some children, get cigarettes at the corner store. Some stores will enforce the "if you're not 18, you're not getting them" idea. Others will be happy to take the money and not care about the consequences. Cigarettes are easily available in corner stores. Beer and wine in corner stores will mean easier access for minors. They're not going to care if the person buying the booze is 16 or 50...they'll sell it to make a buck. The children don't even have to use the "they're for my dad" excuse anymore. I've even seen corner stores sell porno magazines to teenagers. Just to get them out of the store.

Alcohol in corner stores also means higher revenue intake for those corner stores. More money means more likelihood of them getting robbed. Corner stores are not known for their security, and clerks have been threatened or killed for small amounts of money. But more money means some desperate criminal isn't going to care about that clerk. All they'll want is the money.

As far as the societal impact, we already have enough drunks out there with the bars, nightclubs and backyard barbeques. Why do we need any more? And those bartenders and LCBO employees won't sell any booze to drunks because they're afraid of being held liable if they end up hurt or killing someone. Johnny at the corner store isn't likely going to be sued, and probably won't care if his customer is drunk.

And then there's shoplifting. I've seen people who can steal just about anything out of a corner store. I don't care how many cameras you have in the store, booze will vanish just as fast as the cigarettes, porno magazines and chocolate bars have in the past.

What's next...gun stores on one corner and liquor stores on the other.

Yeah, I know that is the meaning of gentrification. I should have left that last line out, but something made Furious come to mind.

LCBO is a HUGE cash cow as you've pointed out. Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve, hell even Saturday morning, that place is filled with customers.

And yes, teenagers will always find a way to get booze or weed. Parents still have liquor cabinets in some houses...older kids will buy for younger ones...and yes, the five finger discount can work at the LCBO.

And as my friend Steamer used to say, you find some farm kid at school out in the country and give him the stuff to grow weed. They'll do it just to be popular.
