audiovisual things

With cable television being cut completely off to save us money, we haven't seen many movies lately. We picked up a coupon book (of which the proceeds went to a local charity) which had some free movie rentals in it. We also bought a DVD to watch.

The Passion of the Christ: I had heard many things about this film before having watched it. I had heard it was controversial, to the point of being inflammatory towards some people. I had heard it was very well done. I had heard that a box of Kleenex was required for viewing.

I didn't know the whole thing was not in English.

Not a problem, though. I grew up watching movies in so many languages that I have become accustomed to letting the action tell the story. It is a controversial film, but any film concerning religion (Last Temptation of Christ comes to mind...) or politics (Fahrenheit 9/11) tends to be controversial. If people were offended by the film, so be it.

I do agree it was very well done. The acting was better than most Hollywood films, and the cinematography was incredibly well done.

As far as the box of Kleenex, I didn't need it. It didn't sadden me or sicken me the way it did some people. Some of the scenes were a little violent, more violent than I've seen in other films. I would say that films like Once Were Warriors were far more violent without having to show every detail the way the Passion did.

I would definitely recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it, regardless of their ideological beliefs. * * * * *

Urban Legends: Bloody Mary: I had seen the first Urban Legends movie and thought this might be a decent horror movie. Boy, was I wrong. It is so disjointed and choppy that it looks like most of the film was left on the cutting room floor. In fact, I have had people complain about Quentin Tarantino making films for drug addicts because they're the only ones who can follow along with his films (and for the record, I can follow along with his films without problems and I have never taken drugs)...this is a film for those people who take drugs and watch movies. The acting was horrible to say the least. The violence was far too overdone, and the story was far too underdone. I wouldn't recommend this film to anyone.

Shark Boy and Lava Girl: if you've seen a Spy Kids movie, you really don't need to bother with this one. The only good thing about this film is that Shark Boy, a professional wrestler, is suing the company for using his name to make such a bad film. The 3D effects were not bad, but the story and the acting were really poor. Don't bother buying this one; it'll be on a cereal box soon enough.

As far as audio things go, no new CD's to add to the collection, although In A Coma will be coming soon. I got a new set of headphones to replace the entire CD player that didn't survive my boot going through it. Plugged them into an old, cheap CD player and what a difference they made. I now hear things in songs I've never heard before. Hearing keyboards when there were none before is just amazing. Hearing lyrics that never made it out of the cheap speakers on that old POS stereo system is incredible. I'm rediscovering my entire CD collection.

That's it for today...
